Written by Les Rivières | April 5, 2019

It’s not just the seasons that change, our skin does too! Temperature changes, exposure to the sun and swimming all have an impact on the appearance and hydration of the skin. Do you know how to keep your hair shiny and your skin soft? Prepare them now for the arrival of good weather, sun and heat with our tips!

Preparing your skin for summer

Under the winter layers of clothing, your skin has suffered more damage than you think. To give it a boost before applying your makeup, here are some treatments to do once or twice a week.

1. Exfoliation

When: 2 to 3 times a week

Exfoliation is a crucial step in preparing your skin for summer. Its purpose is to remove dead cells from the surface of the skin to allow the epidermis to breathe again. It promotes cell regeneration. Use an exfoliating gel in the shower, when your skin pores are fully dilated. Use circular movements when applying the gel to your arms and legs. Go gently over sensitive areas such as the chest and stomach. If you want to do a little something for the environment, choose plastic-free granules!

2. Dry brushing

When : 1 to 2 times a week

Using an exfoliating glove or dry brush will help you achieve silky, soft skin for the summer. By stimulating the circulation, the lymphatic system and the immune system, it detoxifies the skin. Choose a brush with fairly stiff bristles and a long handle to reach your entire back. If you go for the glove, choose bristles that are stiff enough to massage and exfoliate the skin deeply. Dry brushing is done in the shower, before washing your body. Gently brush your skin for 2 minutes. Avoid the face and make long, gentle movements. Rinse and soap your skin as usual. Hydrate yourself after your shower.

3. Self-massage

When: Once a week

Using a skin oil designed specifically for self-massage, or a cream, massage your entire body. Start with the back of the neck and the area behind the ears, finishing with the neck and shoulders. Use small circular movements to activate the blood circulation. Continue with the arms, using long movements and finishing with circular movements. Finish with your legs, making long movements from the bottom up. For your hands and feet, make small circles with your fingertips. In addition to deeply moisturizing your skin, self-massage activates blood circulation throughout your body. Your skin will be more radiant.

4. Hydration

When : Every day

Hydration of the body, especially after the winter period, is essential. When you get out of the shower or bath, apply your favorite moisturizing cream or mist. Don’t wait more than 5 minutes before moisturizing so that your skin pores are still well dilated.

5. Body mask

When : once a week

After exfoliating or brushing your body, apply a moisturizing mask all over your body. Leave on for a few minutes for better moisturization. Some masks are applied before going to sleep for radiant and shiny skin when you wake up.

6. Protection

When : before exposure to the sun

Finally, to properly prepare your body for summer, don’t forget to protect it. Your skin should be protected at all times before any exposure to the sun. A tip to help you remember? Choose a moisturizing cream for the face and body with UV protection.

7. Cut
When : at least once before summer

Did you know that cutting the ends of your hair protects them from the sun’s rays? Freshly cut ends will be stronger and more resistant. Your hair will break less easily and retain all its shine. Visit the hair care professionals at the Center:

8. Hydrate

When : 1 to 2 times a week

Especially for colored hair, hydration is essential before sun exposure. Apply a hair mask once or twice a week to rehydrate your hair according to the level of hydration you need. The more you swim in chlorine and salt water, the more your hair will need deep hydration. Ask your hairdresser, there are many moisturizing masks available in the salon or elsewhere.

9. Maintain your color

When : all summer long

Before summer, opt for a trim or a color change. A freshly applied dye will help your hair stay beautiful and shiny all summer long. Why not take the opportunity to lighten your usual color a little? Between tanning sessions, don’t forget to use shampoo for colored hair. The extra moisturizing formula will protect the color and preserve shine.

10. Protect

When : before exposure to the sun

Sunlight, chlorine, sea salt.  In cream, spray or gel form, look for a product designed to protect the hair before exposure to the sun. Just like your skin, the sun’s rays can damage your hair.  There are several varieties of products with an anti-UV filter. Choose the one that suits you best.

Get out your skirts, dresses and swimwear, summer is coming! These tips are valid for every change of season or before a vacation in the sun.
